Attendance Matters
When students are in school, they are learning, building friendships, and setting themselves up for a bright future. Every single day of school counts, and we are committed to partnering with our families to make sure every student is present and engaged.
For Families
Our district tracks both excused and unexcused absences as well as excused and unexcused tardies (which include early checkouts), and they affect a student's official record differently.
Excused Absences/Tardies
These are approved under district policy and state law. While they do not count toward legal truancy, they are included in total chronic absenteeism metrics. Examples include:
- Student Illness
- Family Emergency
- Educational Activities Outside School Opportunities (require pre-approval)
Absences and tardies that are NOT accompanied by a valid note or pre-approved under district guidelines are considered unexcused. Unexcused absences and tardies directly trigger state truancy interventions.
Parent Notes & Absence Limits
- 10-Day Parent Note Limit: Parents or guardians may submit written notes to excuse up to 10 school days per year for student illness (including for mental or behavioral health). Please turn in excuse notes directly to your school's main office within three days of the absence timeframe.

Kentucky Attendance Laws
The state requires strict legal measures to ensure consistent school attendance.
House Bill 611 (Legal Intervention Thresholds)
- Grades K–5: If a student accumulates 15 or more unexcused absences in a school year, the Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP) is legally required to report the matter to the county attorney for court intervention.
- Grades 6–12: If a habitual truant reaches 15 or more unexcused absences, the district must refer the student to the county attorney and a court-designated worker.
Driver’s License Eligibility ("No Pass, No Drive" — KRS 159.051)
For teenagers, driving privileges are tied to school attendance. A student’s driver's license or permit can be revoked or denied if they accumulate nine or more unexcused absences in a single semester or are declared academically deficient.
Educational Enhancement Opportunities (EHO)
Families 0may request up to 10 school days per year for high-value educational activities outside school (such as intensive experiential learning or foreign exchange). Requests must be submitted on an EHO form and approved by the principal prior to the absence. Approved EHO days count as present.
