• A message from Executive Principal, Lester Diaz.

Welcome to Douglass High School a member of the Academies of Lexington.  We feature four different academies (Freshmen Academy, Academy of Health Sciences, Academy of Technology and Academy of Professional Services).  Each academy features career pathways that provide both a living wage and viable future work opportunities.  Transforming education into a path for future success and opportunities is important to us.  Real-world, relevant and rigorous learning with a focus on pathways our kids chose.  We truly understand why we do what for our kids.

A message from Academy Coach, Dr. Shawn Hinds.

At Frederick Douglass High School, and the Academies of Lexington, we believe that students deserve a new type of educational experience that's as innovative, immersive, and engaging as the world around them. We work hard to provide connections between the classroom and the real-world because we know that this innovative approach to education allows students to thrive in today's economy. Our small learning communities are centered around career themes that are relevant to the Bluegrass region. Using data from the Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics, we rooted our academy themes in areas we found would help fill the future talent gaps.

But this isn't just about jobs. The academies promote teamwork, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, which are skills relevant to all areas of life. Not only that, the academies help students see the purpose of what they're learning by linking career/technical content with the traditional core content of high school. So, now a student doesn't have a reason to ask, "Why do I need to know this?"

We are so excited to be on the forefront of this innovative experience in Lexington. If you're interested in learning more about the academies, please feel free to give me a call at (859)-381-3780 x.52017.
