Ms. Laurie Fields

Laurie Fields began teaching at SCAPA in 1997 when there were only 4 high school ballet majors! Since 2010, she has been responsible for the Elementary and Middle School Ballet majors at SCAPA Bluegrass, and the High School Ballet majors at SCAPA Lafayette.  At SCAPA Ms. Fields teaches ballet, pointe, modern and yoga in the major technique classes, and supplements the curriculum with units such as pedagogy, college/career planning, history, anatomy and choreography.

Ms. Fields began dancing at her mother’s studio in Raleigh, North Carolina and continued her studies at Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, and the University of Iowa. She has an undergraduate degree in Architecture from North Carolina State University, and an MFA in Dance from University of Iowa. Ms. Fields danced professionally with groups such as Atlantic Dance Theatre, Nebraska Dance Theatre and companies of the Yard in Martha’s Vineyard and NYC. She has received grants from the North Carolina Arts Council and the Kentucky Arts Council. Her choreography has been seen locally in productions by SCAPA, the Dancers’ Studio, Ballet Under the Stars, Kentucky Ballet Theatre, UK Opera Theatre, UK Dance Ensemble and UK Department of Theatre and Dance. She teaches outside of SCAPA at her studio, Dancers’ Studio, where she has classes for students of all ages. She has also taught at Camp ArtSmart, Summer Shades, EKU, UI, ECU, UK and Transylvania University.

Ms. Fields is the proud mother of one daughter, Alecia, who danced at SCAPA, NCSA, and professionally with Ballet Met. Her daughter then graduated from UK and Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and is now working as a OB/Gyn Doctor in Somerset. Laurie is also a proud “Lala” to her grandsons, Colson and Aiden!
