World Language Programs
FCPS recognizes the importance of preparing students to compete in an increasingly multicultural and global community. To be successful, Kentuckians must enter the workforce with expanded cultural horizons and increased communication skills. So we offer students the opportunity to learn classical and modern languages such as French, German, Latin, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. In the process, students will learn to communicate with others and develop insight into their own language and culture.

Seal of Biliteracy
In 2017, the Fayette County Board of Education adopted the Seal of Biliteracy as a form of recognition for graduating seniors who can demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English and one or more world languages. This initiative supports the district’s commitment to preparing students to excel in a global society. Qualifying graduates receive the Seal of Biliteracy emblem on their diploma and a notation on their Infinite Campus transcript as official recognition of their language skills and proof to share with colleges, universities, and potential employers. To date, FCPS has 367 recipients representing 14 world languages!
The district’s 2021 STARTALK Chinese Language Camp is a free, two-week opportunity designed for K-5 students currently studying Chinese at Dixie Magnet, Liberty, Millcreek, or Veterans Park Elementary. The goal is to increase their language and cultural awareness through immersion with hands-on activities, cultural-focused specials, and extended at-home learning.
Registration opens April 12, and the camp runs June 7-18. New this year, students may attend either the 2½-hour morning or afternoon session. Space is limited, and the spots fill on a first come first served basis. Tates Creek Middle School is the host site, and families must provide their own transportation.
