World Language Programs
FCPS recognizes the importance of preparing students to compete in an increasingly multicultural and global community. To be successful, Kentuckians must enter the workforce with expanded cultural horizons and increased communication skills. So we offer students the opportunity to learn classical and modern languages such as French, German, Latin, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. In the process, students will learn to communicate with others and develop insight into their own language and culture.
Seal of Biliteracy
In 2017, the Fayette County Board of Education adopted the Seal of Biliteracy as a form of recognition for graduating seniors who can demonstrate a high level of proficiency in two or more languages: English and any other world language. This initiative supports the district’s commitment to preparing students for a global society. Qualifying graduates receive the Seal of Biliteracy emblem on their diploma and a notation on their Infinite Campus transcript as official recognition of their language skills and proof to share with potential employers, colleges, and universities as per their high level of language attainment.

FCPS offers the STARTALK Chinese Language Program for students in grades K-5 to practice the language and learn more about the culture. Applicants must currently be studying Chinese in an FCPS classroom or be native/heritage speakers; this free two-week program (typically in June) is not for beginners. The session culminates with a student showcase.
