Non-Traditional Instruction/Differentiated Distance Learning
Dear Veterans Park Elementary Families,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! It is hard to believe we are winding down the summer and getting ready for the new school year. While many of our summers have looked different without vacations, pool time or summer sports we hope that you all have had time to relax.
With the quickly approaching school year we know that many families have questions and concerns about what school will look like and the impact this will have on your family. Hopefully you have heard the decision from the district to start the school year with Distance Learning. Many of you participated in NTI (non-traditional instruction) last spring and we genuinely appreciate your patience and grace while we all navigated those unchartered waters. We do want families and students to understand that Distance Learning this fall will be different than the NTI experience last spring. Once school begins we want to assure you that students will receive grade appropriate content and assignments as well as intentional instruction by their teachers. We will be providing detailed information with families as to the structure and expectations later in August. However, I do want families to know that the goal of Distance Learning is to look as much like face-to-face instruction as possible.
We have reviewed your feedback from the district surveys and are considering input to make this process successful. Our plan as a school is to streamline communication so that families will have one digital location to find all necessary information specific to each grade level, locating student assignments, and support for families.
The district has also announced that Fayette County school will be going 1:1 with Chromebooks. Prior to this announcement Veterans Park was 1:1 second through fifth grade. Therefore, we are incredibly excited to have the additional technology available to our students. If your student will need a Chromebook to participate in Distance Learning for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year we will be checking these out the week prior to school starting.
Our staff has been diligently working to prepare for Digital Learning. Families will be receiving a letter from their child’s homeroom teacher providing more information regarding the start of school. Please note that as enrollment fluctuates there may be adjustment made to class placement to balance student teacher ratios. If a change is to be made prior to school starting you will receive information from administration and the classroom teacher. The staff has also adjusted school supply lists to better meet the needs of Digital Learning. You will receive an updated list in the teacher mailing along with it being posted on the VPE website. Please look for these letters to arrive in the mail early in August.
We are looking forward to a great start to the 2020-2021 school year. While we know that it may look different in terms of the delivery model our high expectations and standards for student learning and growth remained the same. If the year 2020 has taught us anything thus far is that we continue to rise to any challenges that are presented to us and I have full faith in the staff of VPE to provide excellent learning opportunities for your children.
We will continue to update families of information to start the school year. Thank you for allowing us to partner with you in your child's educational journey.
