Why Writing Matters

Writing is much more than handwriting or spelling. It is a powerful way for students to think, learn, explore ideas, and share what they know with others. Strong writing skills help students understand their subjects better, think critically, communicate clearly, and prepare for success in college, careers, and everyday life.

Kentucky law (KRS 158.6453 and House Bill 257) requires every school district to have a clear writing program. FCPS is committed to building strong writers across all grade levels and all subjects — not just during reading block and in English class.

Our Goals for Every Student

• Develop confidence and enjoyment in writing.
• Learn to write for different purposes and real audiences.
• Use writing to explore ideas, explain thinking, tell stories, and make arguments.
• Build skills gradually from kindergarten through high school.
• Connect writing to reading, thinking, and learning in every class.

How Families Can Help

Engage your child in rich conversations about their learning experiences to build oral language skills, which are the foundation of strong writing.

• Ask your child to explain what they are writing and why.
• Encourage reading at home — it strengthens writing.
• Celebrate effort and improvement.
• Look for writing your child brings home and discuss it together.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

FCPS will provide high-quality instructional resources and training for teachers and leaders so that writing instruction is consistent and high-quality across the district. This program will be reviewed and strengthened over time based on what works best for students.
