Audition Tasks
Each student may audition on the string instrument of their choice.
Performance:
- Each student should prepare two (2) pieces of contrasting styles (fast/slow or from different time periods).
- Students should choose music that reflects their interpretive and technical abilities.
- Suggested repertoire might include selections from Suzuki Books Vol. II–IV or higher or any other comparable level solo repertoire that is 1–3 grade levels above.
- Students should ask their school orchestra director for help as needed.
- Note: Students MUST perform unaccompanied.
- Memorization of the music is optional but highly encouraged and may improve overall audition score.
On-Demand Sight-Reading (6–12): (6-7 Samples, 8-12 Samples) -- Exercises will include the following criteria.
- Keys include D Major or G Major (6-12) C, F, or B-flat (8-12)
- 1 or 2 accidentals
- 2/4 or 4/4 meter
- Rhythmic values will include: dotted half notes, dotted quarter notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, and whole notes and all equivalent rests.
- Various dynamic ranges and articulations
- Grades 8–12 only: Some shifting may be required for bassist and cellists.
For possible SCAPA placement:
Because of available service options at SCAPA Lafayette, students may only audition on one of the following instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, or String Bass.
