Audition Tasks
Each student may audition on the band instrument of their choice.
- Performance:
- Each student should prepare two (2) pieces of contrasting styles (fast/slow or from different time periods).
- Students should choose music that reflects their interpretive and technical abilities.
- Suggested repertoire might include selections from any instrument-specific solo literature/etude books typically 1–3 grade levels above.
- Students should ask their music teacher for help as needed.
- Note: Students MUST perform unaccompanied.
- Memorization of the music is optional but highly encouraged and may improve overall audition score.
* Percussion students auditioning for SCAPA must include one piece for pitched percussion such as xylophone or marimba, etc.
- On-Demand Scales:
- Students in grades 6-12 will be asked to perform one major scale selected from the following: Concert B-flat, Concert E-flat, Concert F, Concert A-flat, Concert C.
- Students in grades 8-12 will also be asked to perform a two-octave chromatic scale.
- On-Demand Sight-Reading: (6-7 samples, 8-12 samples) -- Examples include the following criteria:
- Keys include Concert B-flat or Concert E-flat, Concert F, Concert A-flat, Concert C
- 1 or 2 accidentals
- 2/4 or 4/4 meter
- Rhythmic values will include: dotted half notes, dotted quarter notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, whole notes and all equivalent rests.
- Various dynamic ranges, articulations, syncopation
For possible SCAPA placement: Because of available service options at SCAPA at Bluegrass, you may only audition on one of the following instruments: Flute, Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium/Baritone, Trombone, Tuba, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Oboe, or Percussion/Drums.
