About the Jazz Band

This activity serves as a supplemental ensemble to the concert band program here At Edythe J. Hayes Middle School.  This activity is available to students who wish to learn to play basic styles of jazz.  Emphasis is placed on the swing style and improvisation using the blues scale.  Through ensemble rehearsal, individual practice, and a variety of performance opportunities, the students will gain an understanding and appreciation for this great art form.  Emphasis will be placed on not just performance technique, but also rudimentary improvisational skills, musicianship, and a sense of personal accountability. 

Student requirements for jazz band is as follows:

• Currently enrolled in 7^th or 8^th grade band.
• Ability to attend all after school rehearsals.

The following instruments are utilized in the jazz band:

• Alto Sax
• Tenor Sax
• Bari Sax
• Trombone
• Trumpet
• Piano
• Drum set
• Guitar – Electric (not Acoustic)
  • -must be able to read regular sheet music not Tab
• Bass - Electric or Acoustic
  • - must be able to read regular sheet music not Tab
