If your child has asthma, please fill out a health-care plan, a medication authorization form, and a physician order and return them to the school. This information will be shared with appropriate staff such as the classroom teacher and physical education teacher. The parent/guardian comments and instructions will help us to assist your student during asthma episodes as well as minimize restrictions at school.
According to FCPS medication policy, all medications -- including inhalers -- are to be stored in a secure location and students are to be supervised by school staff when taking them. This policy aims to ensure the safe use of all medication, to prevent errors and to keep children from sharing their medications with others. The school staff is responsible for safe and supervised medication administration to students, except as noted below.
A student is allowed to carry their inhaler only if:
- It has been determined that the student is socially, cognitively, physically and emotionally mature enough to carry and administer the inhaler;
- A physician order and authorization for self-administration of medication are completed and on file at school.
When students give their own medication, the school staff will not be responsible for monitoring the frequency of use, expiration date, or amount of medication available.
Please submit a current photograph of your child so he can be easily identified; this will be distributed to personnel on a need-to-know basis, such as bus drivers, substitutes, and cafeteria staff.
Reminder: Always let the school know of any changes in your student's medical condition or emergency phone numbers.
If daily medication, EpiPens, inhalers, Diastat, or Glucagon are to be taken on a field trip, a trained FCPS staff member must accompany the student if a parent/guardian is not available to attend. Daily medication and emergency medication administrat ion trainings are offered at the beginning of the school year and are good for one academic year.
