  • What is it?

A MAC address is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces such as wireless and ethernet cards. When a computer (regardless if it is wired or wireless) connects to a computer network, it is physically identified on that network by its MAC address. All devices with a wired or wireless network card - regardless of manufacture or operating system - will have this unique address. This not only includes computers, laptops, and smart phones, but also your XBOX 360, PS3, PSP, Vita, DS, Wii, Nook, Kindle, and just about every other Internet enabled device.

We use the MAC address of wireless cards to identify a specific computer to determine if its MAC address is listed in the wirless database. If a MAC address is not in the wireless database, the device will not be able to connect to the wireless network.

MAC stands for MEDIA ACCESS CONTROL and is sometimes referred to as a PHYSICAL ADDRESS as its number is physically burned-in to nearly all network hardware. Its format consists of 12 unique Hexadecimal digits (such as 01:23:45:67:89:ab). No two devices have the same MAC address. The MAC address is not transmitted over the Internet but is strictly used by the local network for machine identification purposes. An IP Address (Internet Protocol) is what is used in the transfer of actual data across networks.
