PLD Family:

As principal of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, I am very excited to welcome you!  Dunbar is one of the largest schools in the state, however, parents, students and staff say PLD feels like a small school because of the close relationships we forge together.

We try to live by our mission statement every day with everything we do.  “Dunbar High School’s faculty and staff, in partnership with parents and community members, empower students to achieve high standards for academics, integrity, leadership, and citizenship”.

Our vision is that every one of our students graduates college and/or career ready.  To that end, our Grading Committee worked tirelessly for three years to develop a grading policy that provides an accurate representation of student performance on content standards, focuses students on their learning instead of their grade, and provides teachers with data to make informed, instructional decisions.

In response to feedback we received from our Student Voice Team, we have included a College and Career Readiness block in our master schedule.  During this weekly class, students explore career interests and pathways while learning essential life skills that will be required of them upon graduation.

We are proud to provide an expansive and diverse offering of extra and co-curricular activities.  It  is our hope that every one of our students is involved in at least one.  There is something for everyone!

We also want our students to feel very safe while here at school.  We have an active PBIS (Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports) committee that is responsible for developing a school-wide approach to teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors.

We have an open door and communication policy at PLD.  Please feel free to contact us anytime you have a question or concern.

I look forward to partnering with you in an effort to provide your child with the best high school experience possible.

Sincerely,

Betsy Rains
