Director of Grants, Research, Accountability, & Data
Buchanan came to FCPS from Minneapolis Public Schools, where he served as a data scientist in the Office of Research, Evaluation, Assessment, and Accountability. Prior to that, he was a strategic data fellow at the Mississippi Department of Education, a research associate at the BERC Group in Washington, and a research and methodology consultant. He also served three years in the U.S. Army and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Buchanan earned a PhD in K-12 Educational Leadership from TUI University, a master’s degree in Urban Education Policy from Brown University, a master’s in Teaching and Learning from TUI University, and a bachelor’s of music in Jazz Composition from the Berklee College of Music. In addition to being selected as a strategic data fellow from the Center for Education Policy Research at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Buchanan received an Urban Education Policy fellowship at Brown University and several Berklee achievement grants from Berklee College of Music. He was also awarded three Army commendation medals and a combat action badge.
