Degrees and Certifications:

Ms. Laurie Fields

I began teaching at SCAPA in 1997 when there were only 4 high school ballet majors! Since 2010 I have been responsible for the Elementary and Middle School Ballet majors at SCAPA Bluegrass, and the High School Ballet majors at SCAPA Lafayette I teach ballet, pointe, modern and yoga in the major technique classes, and supplement the curriculum with units such as pedagogy, college/career planning, history, anatomy and choreography.

I began dancing at my mother’s studio in Raleigh, North Carolina and continued my studies at Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, and the University of Iowa. I have an undergraduate degree in Architecture from NCSU, and an MFA in Dance from UI. I danced professionally with groups such as Atlantic Dance Theatre, Nebraska Dance Theatre and companies of the Yard in Martha’s Vineyard and NYC. I have received grants from the North Carolina Arts Council and the Kentucky Arts Council. My choreography has been seen locally in productions by SCAPA, the Dancers’ Studio, Ballet Under the Stars, Kentucky Ballet Theatre, UK Opera Theatre, UK Dance Ensemble and UK Department of Theatre and Dance. I teach outside of SCAPA at my studio, Dancers’ Studio, where I have classes for students of all ages. I have also taught at Camp ArtSmart, Summer Shades, EKU, UI, ECU, UK and Transylvania University.

I am the proud mother of one daughter, Alecia, who danced at SCAPA, NCSA and Ballet Met. She then graduated from UK and Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and is now working as a Doctor for the University of Rochester. I am also a new “Lala” after the birth of my Grandson Colson!
