  • Students return to the classroom!

Almost 150 youngsters – some excited and eager, others subdued and a tad sleepy – returned to campus Feb. 22 after nearly a year of remote learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “They’re thrilled for the kids to come back. We’ve all been counting down the days,” Principal Meredith Ramage said of her staff and teachers. “We’ve got the PPE and everything to keep people as safe as we can, and we’ll take it one day at a time.”

The STEM-focused curriculum (science, technology, engineering, and math) will be taught through the lens of African-American history, culture, and culturally responsive teaching and learning strategies. This new school, which will first be housed in the renovated and historic Johnson Elementary building on Sixth Street, will initially admit 150 boys in grades K-2, adding a level each year through fifth grade.”
