7th grade G&T algebra teacher, Tates Creek Middle School

At my husband’s 30th high school reunion, I was reminded of what a horrible student I was 30 years ago and was thankful to have made it through those teenage years. If I had tried to predict my future profession, I probably would never had said teacher, but after graduating from Transylvania University in 1984, I knew there was a connection between those turbulent years and my calling. Those tough times were full of life lessons that have made me a better mom, wife, friend and teacher.
I started teaching because I loved science and remained a teacher because I love kids. Education is key to helping them find their strengths and push through to overcome their weaknesses. Students need a little steering along the way, and I can guide their steps and offer a hug or word of encouragement when needed.
All classes can be fun and full of energy, regardless of the subject or agenda. I use games and puzzles to build relationships with my students, and these bridges are necessary for them to want to learn. There is only so much I can do, and eventually the kids have to do it themselves. If they trust that I care for them and want the best for them, they will keep trying no matter how hard it gets.
I also love getting the students involved in the learning process, and I use their great ideas to influence our classroom activities. I never think I have a project all figured out because usually my students can think of the best way to learn something new.
