Staff Spotlight: Kathy Parker Simpson
SAFE paraeducator, Wellington Elementary

Historically, SAFE paraeducators primarily worked with behavior issues. At Wellington, however, I have many opportunities to engage with our students in a positive manner. I've learned that teaching children to be accountable for their actions ultimately encourages them to be proud of their individual achievements. Each day I try to touch base with “my kids” to give them a hug for coloring in the lines or to help them get their day off to a good start. It's also fun to turn the tables and let the fifth-graders teach me Singapore Math. I'm also probably one of the few people who enjoys lunch duty -- it gives me a chance to visit with individual children.
As a new school, Wellington is kind of on a learning curve this year. Our principal and leadership staff have been very accepting of ideas to help things operate more smoothly. I am proud to work among so many dedicated, loving, compassionate people.
Wellington also is fortunate to have strong and positive family involvement. Our parents and PTA have worked tirelessly to get our school up and running. Their efforts have made our jobs a little easier, and their work ethic is reflected in our students.
