Staff Spotlight: Sarah Zehnder

Math coach at LTMS and Beaumont

"The first five and a half years of my career, I taught freshman math at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and absolutely loved it! For me, ninth grade is the one year where you can see the change in a student’s level of maturity, commitment to work and growth as a person all right before your very eyes. They enter a school of 2,200 students and aren’t sure which way to turn or where to go. Then, by the time they return the next August, they’ve grown a foot and talk with the incoming freshmen about what they would do differently if they could do it all over again.

"As a math coach at Lexington Traditional Magnet School and Beaumont Middle School for the past couple of months, I have shifted from working with students to working with teachers. I have been able to have even more of an impact by helping them develop and implement engaging and differentiated lessons. Instead of reaching only my 180 students, I can reach the multitude of kids that my 20+ teachers are working with this year and will work with in the future. While very different from teaching, the experience as match coach has been just as rewarding and probably even more educational for me."
