Winburn Middle School was built in 1970 on land in northern Fayette County formerly owned by historian Winston Coleman and his wife, Burnetta. The name "Winburn" is an acronym created from their first names. Our chess, academic and math teams excel in regional and state competitions. We also have a superior music department, with our orchestra consistently earning distinguished ratings from the Kentucky Music Educators Association. When our students leave us, they continue to achieve because “Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior!”

What makes our school special

We educate a diverse population of students from our attendance area and students who come to us as part of the accelerated cluster program. Our student body reflects our global society, and we have many students who are learning English for the first time. We celebrate our students’ achievements as often as we can; the trumpeting of our Warrior walks, the knighting of our Warriors, and the crushing of soda cans are traditional ways of applauding our kids. We also recognize academic achievement by allowing honor-roll students to earn a fun, end-of-year educational trip. The RAP (Realizing Academic Potential) trip allows students to tour college campuses and take in many sightseeing opportunities.
