Southern Middle School, built in 1966 in south Lexington, has the tightest geographical boundary in the district, making it a true neighborhood school. Throughout the years, renovations have allowed for the addition of classrooms, offices and computer labs. Southern has kept current by having mobile computer labs that are completely wireless. Our students and staff operate under the guidelines of “Success takes order, organization, respect, responsibility and motivation.” Southern Middle focuses on student achievement and differentiated instruction.
What makes our school special
Southern is one of three middle schools in the district and one of only a handful in the state to offer the complete CollegeBoard/SpringBoard program in math and language arts. Through this highly engaging, critical thinking-focused curriculum, our students are more prepared to take AP and IB classes in high school. Southern also has an award-winning PTSA. We're the only middle school with a completely student-produced online newspaper and the only Fayette middle school to have a pull-out Gifted and Talented Program. Southern Middle offers a daily T.E.A.M. Time (Together to Encourage, Achieve, and Move). Through this 25-minute period, students receive character education lessons, tools and strategies to succeed academically and an opportunity to move and stretch. T.E.A.M. Time helps students make vital connections to their school, their teachers and their peers. We at Southern motivate and honor our outstanding students with school and community prizes, and recognition ceremonies. When displaying good character and making good choices, students can be invited to a Student of the Month celebration, receive Rainbows of Recognition, P.R.I.D.E. Compliment Cards, or Reward Sheet incentives.
