Southern Elementary opened in August 1969 and was renovated in 2001. We celebrate the success of all children. Our mascot is Splash the Dolphin, and we proudly “Splash for success.” We offer a full academic program that includes Early Start and special area classes such as art, music, writing, computer lab, science lab and a mobile laptop lab.

What makes our school special

The people who make up our school community make Southern Elementary a very special place. We’re a diverse school with a solid teaching staff and actively involved parent and community support. Our focus on instructing one student at a time has resulted in constantly improving academic achievement. Beyond the core academic subjects, Southern is committed to providing a rich arts education program. We are proud to offer our students the opportunity to use the MIE keyboard lab. Additionally, we have a fifth-grade performing troupe called Stix that wows audiences around Lexington with drumming expertise. Our third, fourth- and fifth-graders have a chance to perform with our “Sounds” group, which combines movement and music. Our students are also tough competitors in the Governor’s Cup and Academic Challenge contests.
