Our school was built in 1903 on land that included a spring known as Maxwell's Spring. The school was named for John Maxwell, one of the founders of Lexington. In 1971, the original building was torn down and a new school was built on the same site. Since 1990, Maxwell Elementary has been a Spanish Immersion magnet school; in 2007, the Consulate of Spain accepted the program into its network of International Spanish Academies. The curriculum follows a half-day partial Spanish immersion model. Math, science and language arts are taught in Spanish, while reading, writing, and social studies are taught in English. Students also take arts and humanities classes in Spanish.
What makes our school special
Maxwell students leave our school proficient in both English and Spanish. Our Spanish staff represents eight countries, which provides our students a global perspective of their world.
