Dixie, which is on the northeast side of Lexington, opened in August 1966 and was extensively renovated in 1999. The building is an open-complex school that nurtures the philosophy of a school family and professional learning community. Our magnet emphasis provides an instructional program for every child that maximizes individual strengths and interests. We give each student a chance to appreciate his uniqueness, realize his full potential, develop and learn according to his own style and ability, and become a responsible, successful learner and citizen. The prescribed education allows for plans and objectives to be developed, taking into account the physical, social, emotional and academic development of each student. Children are given responsibilities, choices and opportunities to use self-discipline within a controlled environment. Dixie also accommodates different learning styles. Entrance is determined by a lottery process, or the student must live in the assigned attendance area.
FCPS online application -- The window typically is Aug. 15 to Oct. 7 for the following school year. It's not a first-come, first-served system. Applications may be submitted anytime during the window, and all receive equal consideration.
What makes our school special
We offer Chinese, Discovery Lab (STEM), music, band, orchestra, visual art, library and physical education in rotation. In addition, the five components of the arts (music, drama, dance, visual art, and media/digital art) are naturally integrated into daily instruction, which fosters mastery of higher-level content. Dixie students also apply 21st-century skills: collaboration, creativity, communication, critical and creative thinking, character development, and high-quality human relationships.
All classrooms are equipped with SmartBoard interactive technology, and all classrooms have individual computer stations. In addition, a Dell/PC lab, Mac lab, portable computer labs and iPods/iPads are available. Dixie provides regular opportunities for students to learn and develop benchmarked proficiencies in Mandarin Chinese and offers multiple opportunities for all students to experience a range of global cultures, issues, and connections. Through a digitally interactive curriculum called Quaver Music, students can access individually from home and school. Fourth- and fifth-graders may participate in the orchestra, and fifth-graders can play in the band. Other opportunities include Glee, percussion, and primary chorus.
Dixie has a full-time gifted and talented teacher to provide services in math, reading, leadership, and creative writing. We also offer auditions in visual art, music, drama, and dance to differentiate learning needs. Students meeting the gifted criteria in the arts will qualify for extra services during the regular school day.
