Saturday Detention is a program of Student Support Services

Michelle Beverly, Associate Director of Student Support Services

Saturday Detention program

The purpose of Saturday Detention is to provide a positive, worthwhile, educational experience and a meaningful misbehavior deterrent for those students who have violated school rules. Saturday Detention will be used as a disciplinary action option, in lieu of out of school suspension, for students who have broken the school rules. In some instances, the principal will assign out of school suspension instead of Saturday Detention. Saturday Detention will prevent students from losing instructional time, keeping them in school.

Saturday Detention has three components: detention, academic assistance, and behavior modification. Students who attend Saturday Detention will receive academic assistance and will be given the opportunity to do: homework, make-up, or remedial work, under the supervision of a certified teacher. The teacher will provide tutorial and counseling services. Each student will be given a Behavior Modification Packet. The packet uses introspection to help students understand why they broke school rules and the consequences of their misbehavior. This counseling session will guide students toward acceptable behavior alternatives. Goal setting exercises will be given to students from the Behavior Modification Packet to foster positive behavior.

Operational procedures

The Saturday Detention Program will be in operation at Martin Luther King Academy for Excellence, 2200 Liberty Road, located directly behind Eastside Center for Applied Technology. The program will operate from 8 a.m. to noon on the dates listed below.

Seats will be reserved on a first call-in basis, as there will be only sixty seats reserved. After the maximum is reached, other students will be referred to the next week's detention. An assignment to Saturday Detention will substitute for one full day suspension. Students should be referred when they commit an offense that would result in or require an out of school suspension. Saturday Detention is not to compete with or replace S.A.F.E. programs.

Principals may assign students Monday through Thursday 10 am to 4 pm by contacting Barry Turner by phone (381-3620), fax (381-4031) or email (barry.turner@fayette.kyschools.us). Please state student's name, school, referring principal and student's infraction. No assignments will be taken on Friday.

Monday of the following week the Saturday Detention Program will send each school a report regarding students in attendance the previous Saturday.

Refusal to attend

Saturday Detention is a disciplinary option in lieu of suspension. It should be viewed as an alternative to suspension. Refusal to attend or tardiness without an acceptable excuse may result in the assignment to an additional Saturday Detention or suspension from school.

Saturday Detention Rules

  1. Principal assigns students for disciplinary reasons.
  2. The parent notification will be the responsibility of the Principal assigning the student to Saturday Detention.
  3. If an emergency arises and the student cannot attend, the parent must contact the Principal. If the reasons are acceptable, the detention will be rescheduled.
  4. The doors will open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 8:10 a.m.
  5. Students must have an assignment from all their teachers. If the student does not have an assignment they will not be permitted to attend Saturday Detention. (Homework, make-up work, or remedial work is allowed)
  6. There will be no talking.
  7. Breaks for a drink or restroom use are at the discretion of the detention supervisor.
  8. Students will complete a Behavior Modification Packet.
  9. If a student finishes all of his/her work, the detention supervisor will assign additional work.
  10. If a student refuses to work, he/she may be assigned an additional day of Saturday Detention.
