From Dr. Phil and Dear Abby to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), bullying appears to have taken center stage as the topic "du jour." As the definition of bullying has broadened to include psychological, social, and emotional bullying in addition to the conventional physical bullying, we now realize that bullying touches almost all of the students in a school setting. While bullying has traditionally been seen as merely a rite of passage, it is a serious threat that can have long-lasting detrimental effects on the victims, the bullies, and even the bystanders. On a gravely serious note, interviews with school shooters have revealed that many were seeking retribution for what they felt was a lifetime of victimization. Bystanders may feel anxious for their own safety or guilty for not intervening, and bullies themselves can be destined for further criminal activity if their behavior goes unchecked. The information included in this Website has been compiled by the Fayette County Public Schools' Safe Schools Office from a variety of sources that can be found in the Bullying Resource List. The Safe Schools Office offers a variety of services related to bully prevention and intervention, including staff training and consultation. For further information, please telephone the Safe Schools Office at (859) 381-4223, or contact one of our staff members via email or telephone.
