Student Continuation Plan

Frequently Asked Questions

On January 23, 2006 the Board of Education adopted the Student Continuation Plan. Following are some frequently asked questions and answers.

My only child is already attending our primary school; will we be affected by this plan?

No. Your child will stay at his/her school (with no need to reregister from year to year) unless you move out of the area.

With one child already in his primary school will his younger siblings automatically get into the same school?

Yes, if they will attend at the same time.

Does this affect where my child will attend middle or high school?

No.

What is a primary school?

It is the elementary school that has primary responsibility to serve the children in your neighborhood. It is the same school you would attend with the current attendance area boundaries. You will still go to this school to register your child, and usually you will see very few changes.

Will many new students attempting to enroll at their primary school be affected by this plan?

No, most schools have enough room to admit all incoming students from their primary areas.

What does it mean to have alternate schools?

These are four other elementary schools that are relatively nearby, often in the same feeder pattern as the primary elementary school, and also serve your neighborhood.

May our child attend an alternate school rather than the primary school?

You are expected to enroll at your primary school. If your primary school has space but you prefer an alternate school, you may request an out of area placement at the alternate school. Your child may attend that school if it has sufficient room (with no need to reregister from year to year), but you will be responsible for transportation to that school.

What if my primary school is full when I go to register my child?

FCPS will identify one of the alternate schools with space to serve your child and we will provide transportation to that school. If space is also available at the other alternate schools, your child may attend one of those, but transportation will not be provided. Once enrolled, your child may stay at the alternate school (with no need to reregister each year).

If room becomes available later at our primary school, may my child attend there?

Yes, waiting lists will be time/date stamped and maintained, and your child may go to the primary school as soon as space becomes available during the current year, or at the beginning of the next year, if space is available at that time. This decision is the parent’s choice and parents on the waiting list will be notified if or when space becomes available.

What happens if my family moves?

You will have a new primary school and be expected to enroll your children there.

If moving during the school year, your child may finish the year at the current school. You will be expected to enroll at your new primary school for the next school year (this is consistent with current district practices).
