Frequently Asked Questions

Liberty School

Where is Liberty Elementary School and when will it open?

Liberty Elementary School is under construction at 2585 Liberty Road.  It is on the North side of Liberty Road at Star Shoot Parkway in what is currently the Northern Elementary school primary attendance area.  It will open in August 2008.

Who will be going to Liberty when it opens?

Liberty’s attendance area is being created from parts of Julia R. Ewan, Northern, Breckinridge and Yates.  Many students will come from each of these schools.  Many additional students who live in the area and have been attending other public or private elementary schools are likely to enroll at Liberty.

Why is Julia R. Ewan closing?

Julia R. Ewan is a historic building in an established neighborhood. The new Liberty Elementary School will be located in an area of Lexington with high population growth, and will be better able to serve its families.

When Julia R. Ewan closes and Liberty opens, will all Julia R. Ewan students be able to go to Liberty?

No, there is not sufficient room for all Julia R. Ewan students plus all the other elementary school students living very close to Liberty to go there.  Because of this, the parts of the Julia R Ewan area that are near other schools have been placed in other elementary school attendance areas.

If current Julia R. Ewan students want to go to Liberty but are not in Liberty’s new district, may they go there?

Those who don’t live in the Liberty district but want to attend Liberty may request an “Out of Area” placement at Liberty.  After students who live in the Liberty area are placed at the school, “Out of Area” requests may be approved until the school approaches 90% full (approximately 585 students).  The fullness will be judged by grade level and requests will be considered consistent with policies and procedures used at all elementary schools throughout Fayette County.  Note that students receiving “Out of Area” approval are required to provide their own transportation.

Who needs to pre-register beginning in February 19?

Anyone living in the Liberty area, wanting to attend Liberty, and not presently attending the current primary school for their area (usually Julia R Ewan, Northern, or Yates) must register for next year.  This begins February 19 at Julia R Ewan.  Further details are available at It’s About Kids Support Services as well as Julia R Ewan, Northern, and Yates elementary schools.

Sandersville School

Where is Sandersville Elementary School and when will it open?

Sandersville Elementary School is under construction at 3025 Sandersville Road.  It is on the East side of Sandersville Road near Wigginton Pt.  It will open in August 2008.

Who will be going to Sandersville when it opens?

Most of Linlee’s attendance area will become Sandersville’s attendance area.  Because of overcrowding at Linlee many of the Sandersville area students have been attending Booker T Washington Academy.  To the extent that space is available, additional students who live in the area and have been attending BTWA or other elementary schools may attend Sandersville Elementary.

What parts of the Linlee area will not be in the Sandersville area?

There are several areas which are best understood by looking at a map.  The only ones that have any current students are along Iron Works Pike, Berea Road, or Georgetown Road, North of Interstate 64.  Those living in this area will be in the Russell Cave primary attendance area, and expected to attend Russell Cave.  The other changing areas are either non-residential properties or vacant land not yet developed with homes.

Who needs to pre-register beginning in February 19?

Anyone living in the Sandersville area, wanting to attend Sandersville, and not currently attending Linlee must register for next year.  This begins February 19 at Linlee.  Those currently attending Booker T Washington Academy can register for Sandersville at BTWA through February 29.  From March 1 on new students must register at Linlee (or Sandersville once it’s open.)   Current students at Linlee do not need to pre-register for Sandersville.

When will those attempting to register this winter for Sandersville be notified if they are accepted?

Anyone completing registration materials by March 28 will be notified of the results by May 1.  Those going from Linlee to Sandersville will not need this notification.

Linlee has been very full and turned students away to other schools in recent years.  Do you expect Sandersville to be so full?

Sandersville is larger than Linlee and we expect it to have room for everyone that attempts to pre-register this spring to start in August.  However it is quite possible that some students, especially those attempting to enroll later next fall, will have to go elsewhere and be placed upon a waiting list.

For more information call 381-4100 or 381-3507.

William Wells Brown School

Where is William Wells Brown Elementary School and when will it open?

William Wells Brown Elementary School is under construction at 555 East Fifth Street near Shropshire.  It will open in August 2008.

Who will be going to William Wells Brown when it opens?

Johnson’s current attendance area will become William Wells Brown’s attendance area.  All of Johnson’s K-4 students including Out of Area students are expected to go to William Wells Brown.  Additional students who live in the area and have been attending other elementary schools also may register to attend William Wells Brown Elementary.

Who needs to register beginning in February 19?

Anyone living in the William Wells Brown area, wanting to attend William Wells Brown, and not currently attending Johnson must register for next year.  This begins February 19 at Johnson (and will continue at Brown when it opens.)  Current students at Johnson do not need to register for William Wells Brown.

For more information call 381-4100 or 381-3162.
