Staying Safe: According to the National Safety Council, school buses are the safest form of ground transportation — 40 times safer than the family car!

Bus route information

Students enrolled in Fayette County Public Schools are eligible to be transported to and from their assigned school if their bus stop is a mile or more from the school.

Bus Stops

School bus stops are established with maximum consideration given to safety, efficiency and convenience to riders. Stops are normally at least:

  • Two-tenths of a mile apart for kindergarten, early start and elementary
  • Three-tenths of a mile apart for middle school
  • Four-tenths of a mile apart for high school

Bus stops will not normally be located on dead-end streets, cul-de-sacs, or other places within residential areas that would require the bus to back up in order to turn around.

Bus Routes

Outside a one-mile radius from the school, bus routes are established using three primary factors:

  • The capacity of the bus
  • The length of time riders spend on the bus
  • The width of the road or street

For safety reasons, Board of Education procedures prohibit school buses from entering cul-de-sacs, side streets or dead-end roads. Further, procedures prohibit backing of the buses in residential areas without the assistance of a ground guide.

School buses are routed on main thoroughfares which reduce the necessity for backing and turning around in congested areas. Additionally, buses will not normally be routed on roads or streets that are not wide enough to permit two-way traffic. For example, when on-street parking reduces the available street width to less than required for two-way traffic, bus service may be restricted from those streets. An exception to normal routing may occur with special education students whose disability may require more personal transportation.

Magnet Schools and Other Special District-Wide Programs

Magnet students living in the attendance area of their assigned magnet school may ride the regular bus serving that area. School bus service is not routinely provided for students attending magnet schools outside their normal attendance area. Students enrolled in Gifted & Talented Programs may obtain transportation from designated pick-up points strategically located throughout the district. Return transportation is also provided to these same points in the afternoon. Detailed information may be obtained by calling the Routing Office, Transportation Division.
