Staying Safe: According to the National Safety Council, school buses are the safest form of ground transportation — 40 times safer than the family car!

Parents can help promote safety

Adult presence at bus stops

Safety awareness around the bus stop increases with the addition of adult supervision. When possible accompany your children while they wait for the bus.

Flashing lights and stop arms

Flashing lights! It is illegal to pass a school bus that is loading when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out.

You must stop and remained stopped until the driver disengages the stop arm and red lights.

Be aware that there may be children crossing the road.

Kentucky law allows the bus driver to turn in the license tag number of stop arm violators. Once an owner is determined, the bus driver can swear out a warrant for the owner who is responsible for a hefty fine and loss of license points.

Children should be extra cautious

Kids dashing in trafficMake sure to re-emphasize the importance of looking both directions for automobile traffic.

Whether they are on the way to the bus stop, walking to school or getting dropped off near schools or bus stops, if they are in the street, they are in danger.

Not only are there lots of cars in and around the school, but people are going to work at the same time, increasing traffic congestion. Children often don't look and dart out from between parked cars.

Discouraged bus stop items

Children do not realize that their everyday toys can be a danger at the bus stop. Encourage your children not to take balls, frisbees, skateboards, and similar items to the bus stops.

These items generally need more room than what is allotted at the bus stop. Thrown objects become projectiles and can be a danger to inattentive students and promote being in the street.

Most items that cannot be stored and kept in the backpack during the bus ride are prohibited.
