Child Nutrition Program

Child nutrition is our business!

FoodChildren who are hungry find it hard to stay alert and participate in their classroom experiences. Our school breakfast program helps close the “readiness” gap with nutritious food in a cost-effective manner before classes begin. School lunches are planned to provide 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowances for school-age children. Menus are planned to include a daily variety of choices such as assorted fresh fruits, vegetables, low fat milk and whole grain products. Also, changes have been made in food specifications and preparation to lower fat, sodium and sugar in school meals.

In the school year 2006-2007, FCPS served 1,071,597 student breakfasts, 3,828,448 student lunches, and 261,669 after school snacks.

We serve education — every day!

Fayette County Public Schools Child Nutrition Program (CNP) is one of 96,000 school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program (established in 1946) and one of 72,000 districts participating in the School Breakfast Program (established in 1966). It is one of many self -supporting programs throughout the nation, receiving no funding through the district's general fund.

The NSLP and NSBP are federally assisted meal programs providing nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free meals to students each school day. School districts that choose to take part in the program receive cash subsidies and donated commodities from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for each student meal they serve.

Offer vs. Serve

The offer vs. serve provision allows our customers to choose 3 or 4 out of 4 food items for breakfast and 3, 4 or 5 out of the 5 food items for lunch. The established selling price must be charged regardless of the student selection of 3 or 4 food items for breakfast or 3, 4, or 5 food items for lunch. No one component (e.g., milk) is required to be selected by the student. The student has the freedom of making their own choices.

Policies

Charge policy

Students and adults are encouraged to pay in advance for food purchases. Any student who forgets or loses his/her money may charge a meal. When a student accrues meal charges, a letter will be sent to notify the parent/guardian. Upon receipt of this notification, parents/guardians are expected to pay the charge in full. When a student’s charges reach the amount equivalent of two lunches and two breakfasts (high school and middle school - full pay - $6.10, reduced - $1.40) (elementary – full pay - $5.90, reduced - $1.40) a nutritious snack of a plain cheese sandwich and a milk will be provided. If your child has documented allergies, other provisions will be made.

Adults will pay for meals in advance or at the time of purchase. There are no provisions for adult charges.

Account Deposits

Deposits in any amount may be made to a student's personal account, thus reducing the chance that breakfast or lunch money will be forgotten, lost, or stolen. While students still have the option of paying as they go through the line, advance payment will speed transactions allowing lines to move more quickly and affording more time for eating their meals. All students have personal accounts regardless of paying status (free, reduced, or full pay). School staff members are encouraged to open accounts for their food purchases, also.

Assistance Meals Program

Children from families whose income is at or below established low income levels are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Applications must be filled out for each new school year and may be completed any time during the school year. Applications are to be returned to the school office or cafeteria manager. Application forms are available from the school office and/or the cafeteria manager.

After School Snack Program

After school snacks are available to children after their regular school day ends giving them a nutritional boost. Students must be enrolled or participate in regularly scheduled educational or enrichment activities in a supervised environment.
