One Community, One Voice
One Community, One Voice works with the school system and other community partners to support parents who are committed to being actively involved in their children's education and their schools.
OCOV and the Closing the Gap Community Committee was established by the Board of Education in February 2002. Their mission was to support and enhance efforts to close the achievement gap among all students.
One of the major initiatives of OCOV is the annual Academic Challenge series, which gives kids an opportunity to compete in rigorous academic contests that embrace knowledge as a worthy endeavor. The series includes the Academic Challenge Invitational, the Principal's Cup and the Superintendent's Cup.
Among other initiatives is Every Child on the Same Page, a communitywide program that seeks to nurture a love of reading and to ensure that every child in Lexington is proficient in reading by the end of third grade.
OCOV also publishes a quarterly newsletter for parents of students in Fayette County Public Schools. It's About Parents contains practical advice and information about programs and services that support school success.
The OCOV action plan, released in 2004, includes reports from several subcommittees: world-class standards and accountability; teachers; early children education; exceptional and diverse learners; parent and family involvement; leadership; school-based decision-making; discipline ad hoc subcommittee; and financial ad hoc subcommittee.
