Thanks to all for preparing our kids well

As state testing begins, I want to thank everyone for all they have done this year to make sure our kids are learning at very high levels. This testing is a way for us to let our community know how we are doing. I have no doubt that our kids will show everyone that they are performing at the highest levels we have ever seen. There is extraordinary teaching and learning in our schools!

I also would like to thank all of our families and our overall community for their continued support of our schools. We are truly blessed in Fayette County to have people who believe in us and stand alongside us as we move forward. The 16th District PTA, under the leadership of Tina Moorhead, is one of the best in this country, and I feel so blessed to be working with them. In addition, while we have had phenomenal Board of Education members through the years, this board as a whole is one of the best Lexington has ever seen.

It takes all of us working together to make the kind of progress we are seeing, and I just want to say a big thank you!

Special congratulations go out to Leestown Middle School for winning the recent Battle of the Books competition and to Paul Laurence Dunbar High School for bringing home another state academic championship. We continue to see our students and staff succeed at high levels, and we are proud of their accomplishments!

Meanwhile, as spring weather tries to break through, we are moving our schools from heat to air conditioning. With some of our older schools, it takes a couple of days to make the switch. We hope to complete it this week, and we hope the temperatures cooperate with us.

Good luck with KCCT testing!

Love thy neighbor

Dad has taught me that it is important to love thy neighbor. I think that means that I should love that puppy down the street and the big dog that lives next to us. Sam I try to do this with my two-legged friends, too, but sometimes I have a hard time when they are out there digging up the ground and cutting the grass. Dad has been working with me on this, and I am getting better.
However, enough is enough! Dad has been talking about CATS this weekend, and that is where I draw the line. Those little felines walk by my window and just snub their noses at me and make this meow and hissing sound that just drives me nuts.
Dad keeps saying that CATS is different, and this is about testing in our schools and for me to relax. I say no, I am stressed to the max over these CATS, and we will just have to live near each other -- but we don’t have to like each other.
Dad told me that the best way to relieve stress is through laughter, so he started telling me jokes. I laughed a lot and felt better, but what made me feel best of all was when Dad gave me some treats!
  Go dogs!

Bow wow…

Deference vs. rudeness - Limiting my freedom so I do not offend the tastes of those around me.
    I will:
  • Notice those around me.
  • Respect the feelings of others.
  • Not use offensive language.
  • Not play loud music in public.
  • Be careful how I dress.

Matthew sat on the floor among his classmates, nearly indistinguishable as they sang “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” His wheelchair parked near the door, he blended in with the sea of red T-shirts. Read More

With a riveting first chapter or a sharp retort, Sharon Draper gets teens’ attention. Draper, a retired English teacher from Cincinnati who now writes full-time, spoke recently at Tates Creek High School, sharing a little of her craft and a lot of personality. “I write about what is real to their experience,” she said.
