I hope each of you had a great weekend and enjoyed being with your families on Presidents' Day. The year is moving along very quickly, and we have had a few interruptions to instruction because of the cold weather. It looks like the weather issues will continue as we move forward. I have to tell you that our schools are staying very focused on teaching and learning and will continue to do so.

By now you should have received information about the federal recall on beef. Since our district was notified at the end of January, none of that beef has been served. Before notification, some of the meat was consumed, but there were no reports of any illnesses. I appreciate our food service folks for everything they do on a daily basis!

I want to share a story with you about a man who knocked on my door. Mr. Stephen Van Winkle asked if I was Stu Silberman, and I said yes. He told me he found an envelope in the parking lot at Wal-Mart addressed to a Ms. Yates. He checked to see what it was and found there was a $100 bill in there with instructions to purchase items for her classroom.

Mr. Van Winkle left it with me and asked that I get it back to Ms. Yates. We checked our records and found that Ms. Yates worked at Ashland Elementary School. I delivered the envelope to her principal, Schuronda Morton, at our leadership meeting the next day, and she then passed it on to Ms. Yates.

I received an e-mail from Ms. Yates thanking me for getting the money to her. She didn’t realize she had lost it in the parking lot until she got to the Wal-Mart register. She ended up paying for the supplies with her personal credit card.

Ms. Yates was so happy and wanted to know the name of the man who did this good deed so she could thank him.

This story just lets us all know that there are good people in this world! Thank you, Mr. Van Winkle, for making Lexington a better place!
