Life is Fast and Furious

Wow it has been a fast and furious couple of weeks. We are currently hosting celebrations for students who scored all “distinguished” (in every area) on the CATS test. We are definitely making progress - last year we were able to recognize 375 students for this honor and this year we are recognizing 1800 for this same honor! Along the same lines, last year we had three (3) schools break 100 and this year we have thirteen (13)! As you well know, the rubber hits the road in our classrooms so our teachers, staff, kids, and community sure are doing a great job! Keep up the great work!

I am very thankful to be able to let you know that I will continue to serve as superintendent for another four years. Last week our Board unanimously approved a contract extension through June 2012. We are a district on the move - like a snowball going down a hill - but we have just begun! We will continue to move in a positive direction and we will bring all schools to 100 and all students to proficiency!

Also, as you may or may not know, last Monday our dog Sam had to have surgery on his back because his back legs became paralyzed due to disc problems. He is now resting at home, but his back legs are still paralyzed. The vet says that this is pretty normal and he is optimistic that Sam will walk again. His recovery period is about six weeks. Sam talks more about this in his column today.

My hope is that you and your families had a good Thanksgiving. We only have three weeks before winter break, so this is a time to really make sure our kids are buckled down and working hard to complete first semester. There is a lot going on but we must maintain our focus on continuing to raise achievement.

I Am Recuperating from Surgery

I woke up last weekend with a backache and pain going down my legs and it just kept getting worse as time went on so I went to see Dr. Gilpin (our vet) on Monday. He gave me a shot (yikes!) and said that maybe I would get better but if not, he might have to do surgery. Well, the shot didn't help and in a few hours my back legs wouldn't work anymore so Mom took me right back in (she was crying in the car).Sam

Two of the discs in my back ruptured and the vet had to operate and clean it all out to get the pressure off my spinal cord. The doctor said I did very well during the surgery and that Mom and Dad caught it in time. He believes that I am going to get to walk again. Right now, my back legs are still paralyzed and I drag them around when I try to move. It is a little embarrassing because I can't walk outside to go potty so I have to get Dad's attention to carry me outside and hold me up when I go. The doctor said it is a very good thing that I can go by myself even with being held up. Dad has been massaging my legs a lot and moving them around so they don't get stiff but he looks real sad. I go back to have the stitches taken out in about another week. I have this really cool scar on my back - it has 14 stitches and is about 6 1/2 inches long. My back is also shaved and that looks pretty cool, too. One thing is for sure, I haven't lost my appetite - I still love to eat. So, hopefully with some rest and TLC from Mom and Dad, along with a few treats (not too many) I will be back up on my paws in a few weeks. Mom sure learned a lot about this TLC and this physical therapy stuff when she took care of Dad last year. I started to ask Dad about this but I am just too tired right now to hear all about it. Maybe when I start walking again Dad can tell me the story while we are out on our walks together.

I did want to say thanks to a couple of my good friends for writing get well notes to me. Their notes and pictures are below and I think you will agree that they both are very nice and cute! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Bow wow…
