Stonewall Elementary’s PTA is one of only 10 to earn a 2011 Healthy Lifestyles grant from the National PTA.
The “Healthy and Fit Stonewall” program, which will receive $1,000, kicks off with a schoolwide Wellness Night on Nov. 3. The overall focus is educating students and families about nutrition and physical activity.
Under the PTA’s new initiative:
-
Students will be challenged to eat the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables and complete 60 minutes of exercise each day.
-
The children will be asked to share their favorite fruit or vegetable snack recipe for a school cookbook.
-
Stonewall’s PTA will promote the concept of indoor recess during inclement weather, providing ideas and resources for teachers.

“While childhood obesity continues to grow and one in three children is overweight, Stonewall PTA is taking action. We are proud to help elevate their efforts with this grant,” said Betsy Landers, National PTA president. “Research shows that a child’s physical well-being has a significant effect on their learning, so we urge all PTAs and school communities to use Stonewall PTA as an example and engage families, teachers, administrators and students in creative programs that encourage the school community to be active and eat healthier.”
