The deadline for minority- and women-owned businesses to apply for a program to help them compete in the construction business has been extended to Dec. 9.

Classes in the Lexington Minority and Women Contractor Training Program begin Jan. 10.

The 10-week program, which is back for a second year, covers topics ranging from estimating and bidding to subcontracting. Sessions will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Center, 200 E. Main St.

The training is sponsored by the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, Blue Grass Airport, Messer Construction Co., BEX Construction, Fayette County Public Schools and LFUCG.

“It is the partnership which has reignited this program, and we are definitely seeing results,” said Dee Dee Harbut, director for special programs with the development center. “We have seen a number of last year’s participants get contracts as a direct result of them attending the workshops, which makes it a win-win for all.”

The sessions cover business planning, contract law, insurance and performance bonds, accounting and financial statements, drawings and specifications, estimating and bidding, scheduling, cost management, project cash flow analysis, planning and project safety, contracts and documentation, administration, management and subcontracts, claims, alternative dispute resolutions, marketing, networking and building professional relationships.

To qualify, applicants must be a minority or woman-owned business with a 51 percent ownership in a construction or a construction-related business. The cost for companies accepted into the program is $100, which includes boxed dinners.

The training is coordinated by Marilyn Clark, LFUCG’s minority business enterprise liaison. For questions, call (859) 258-3323 or email mclark@lexington.gov.
