Lee Kiefer, a senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, is the second U.S. woman in history to capture an individual medal in foil at the Senior World Championships, according to USA Fencing. Lee won bronze this week in Catania, Italy, losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Valentina Vezzali of Italy.

“We pretty much had two game plans,” Lee told USA Fencing. “I could either go out there and do a low-scoring bout … or I could just do what I want and control the distance. And I really don’t like slow fencing, so I just wanted to fence my style.”

Vezzali, the three-time reigning Olympic gold medalist, won the first of her 19 World Championship medals in 1994, when Lee wasn’t even a month old.

“If I keep improving, eventually I’m going to beat her,” said Lee, who is ranked No. 13 internationally and was competing at her third Senior Worlds after finishing 27th in 2010.

Six months ago, she won silver medals in individual and team events at the Junior Worlds and a silver at the Cadet Worlds. She’s also a two-time Pam American champion.
