Henry Clay sweeps volleyball, soccer regionals

Henry Clay High School went three-for-three in Thursday’s showdowns, defending its 11th Region volleyball title and winning the boys’ and girls’ 13th Region soccer championships. All three teams advance to their respective state tournaments.

The Blue Devils, who have played in the volleyball finals 12 times in the past 14 years, used two decisive runs to defeat Lafayette 25-18, 25-16. Henry Clay (32-8) will meet Mercy in the first round at state.

On the soccer field, tournament MVP John Manga had a goal and an assist in the 3-1 victory over Woodford County. The Blue Devils (20-2-1), who have won their past 12 matches, will host Danville in the sub-section round.

On the girls’ side, Olivia Max made a strike from the left side about 20 yards out to lift Henry Clay to a 1-0 win over host Tates Creek. The Blue Devils (13-4-3) will face Boyle County in the subsectional.

In other boys' soccer action, 14th Region champ Paul Laurence Dunbar (a 1-0 winner over Model) will play at South Laurel.
