elite diverRebecca Hamperian, a senior at Lafayette High School, is one of the country’s best one-meter divers, according to the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.

The Diving All-American Selection Committee tapped her among the Elite Eight of its 100 female honorees for 2010-2011. Rebecca, who is a two-time Kentucky state diving champion, also was a High School All American the previous year.

All divers submitting applications and DVDs are judged by an independent panel of coaches and are scored as in any meet, except it is in front of a large-screen television instead of on the pool deck. From these results, the top 100 boys and top 100 girls are named All Americans. (Besides Rebecca, two other Kentucky students made the cut – one girl and one boy.)

The top ten or so divers are then rated again to produce the Elite Eight and a mythical high school champion.
