Tates Creek is among eight middle school winners nationwide in the land/water division of the annual Lexus Eco Challenge, which encourages students to develop environmental programs that positively impact their communities.

For their project, the Purpledinowolficorns team renovated Tates Creek’s rain garden. The kids also designed school presentations noting the importance of land and water conservation.

Seventh-grader Emily Sandford and eighth-graders Hannah Barnes, Morgan Boaz, Ethan Bridges, Casey Darling, Kasara Miller and Katie Sandford will each receive $1,000 for their efforts. Their adviser, seventh-grade science teacher Melanie Trowel, will get $1,000 for school supplies, and Tates Creek will receive $2,000. The Purpledinowolficorns will also compete for more prize money this spring.

The Lexus Eco Challenge is open to middle and high school students. In last year’s contest, a Tates Creek Middle team of seventh-graders won in this round of the air/climate division.

All winning projects in the land/water and air/climate sections will be entered in next semester’s Final Challenge, which aims to inspire environmental action worldwide. Eight first-place teams will each receive $15,000, while two grand prize winners will take home $30,000 apiece for scholarships and school supplies.
