Dunbar rounds up awards at Beta Club convention

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School won the Convention Sweepstakes award at the 71st annual Kentucky Beta Club senior convention and also took first place in the quiz bowl.

 

The gathering, which was Dec. 9-10 at the Galt House and Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, included conference meetings and guest speakers, statewide officer elections, a talent contest and various student competitions.

 

Alice Liu led the way for Dunbar in the individual contests, taking first place in pencil drawing, first in oil painting and third in cartoon drawing. Other winners included:

 
  • Athena Kern: 1st in Quiz Bowl Test and 2nd in English
  • Vania Ma: 1st in Spanish
  • Valerie Sarge: 1st in Math
  • Christian Wright: 1st in Agriculture
  • Grant Boggess: 2nd in Social Studies

Chloe Cao joined Boggess, Kern and Sarge on the quiz bowl team.

The mission of the National Beta Club is to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. The national senior convention will be June 27-30 in Greensboro, N.C.
