Young fencer captures gold in Europe

Foil fencer Axel Kiefer, a freshman at Paul Laurence Dunbar High, won gold in Halle, Germany, while competing for only the second time at a Cadet European Cup.
Axel went 12-0 in both rounds of pool play to earn the third seed at the table of 128. He defeated Hungary's Daniel Dosa 15-11 in the semifinals and Poland's Bartosz Cegielski 15-8 in the Nov. 27 finals.
The cadet division is for athletes under age 17.
Axel's older sisters, Lee and Alexandra, are also world-class fencing champions.
