Students have a new opportunity to lead “green” efforts in Fayette County through the Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council.

This project-based networking group will empower active teens from all of Lexington’s high schools to invest directly in the community through improvement initiatives and member-sponsored events. Council members were nominated by their high school faculty because of demonstrated leadership and passion for sustainability.

Representatives from Fayette County Public Schools are Bryan Station’s Cindy Garcia and Jeremil Davis; Henry Clay’s Mitch Miller, Jane Brady Knight, Dylan Sarkisian, Macy Early and Chris Gerhardstein; Lafayette’s Ethan Campbell and Sara Caton; Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Orsolya Hegyi, Arunita Kar, Maria Wang and Anna Ming; and Tates Creek’s Sophia McCarty, Jacob Hatcher and Eve Wallingford.

The council’s goals will ultimately be developed by its members and will be revised each school year. This group also will provide ample leadership opportunities through elected offices and committee chairs.

The youth council will partner with local organizations including Bluegrass PRIDE, the University of Kentucky’s Student Sustainability Council, Sustainable Communities Network, Bluegrass Greenworks, Transylvania University’s Student Sustainability Council, and Smith Management Group.

Sustainability Council finalizes plan

The Sustainability Council of FCPS this week finalized its comprehensive and innovative sustainability plan. The chief goals are to protect the environment, preserve natural resources and encourage responsible spending of tax dollars.

This council is made up of a cross-section of FCPS and community stakeholders charged with developing and implementing a realistic yet visionary districtwide plan.
