A Henry Clay High School senior brought home a first-place trophy from the 2011 state wrestling tournament. Joe Whalen, who also led the Blue Devils to their first region title, won an individual championship at 145 pounds.
Joe, who finished seventh in the state last year, decided to drop from the 152 to the 145 category about a month ago. He quickly rose to No. 1 in Kentucky at that weight and sealed it with the state title.
The state tournament was Feb. 19 at the Frankfort Civic Center. Several other wrestlers from Fayette County Public Schools finished in the top eight.
