Wellness recommendations geared toward student health

With an eye toward continually improving students’ health, officials in Fayette County Public Schools prepare an annual nutrition and physical activity report and wellness recommendations.

Among this year’s suggestions:

  • Encouraging schools to develop a Coordinated School Health Committee to monitor needs, resources, physical activity and policy/instruction related to health, physical activity and nutrition.
  • Continuing to assess the sodium content of cafeteria menu items and reduce when possible.
  • Providing “energizers” – activities involving movement – in classroom settings.

The 2011 report was submitted at the school board’s January planning meeting.

In June 2006, the Fayette County Board of Education approved a student wellness policy as required by federal law. Every year, the district hosts a public forum to receive input on its latest Wellness Check-Up and then presents recommendations to the school board.
