Athletes earn state prizes in the pool

FCPS student-athletes and coaches picked up several honors in the 2011 KHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Henry Clay’s Nick Wrightson won his third straight state title in the individual 200 freestyle and was crowned the boys’ Outstanding Meet Competitor; and Lafayette’s Rebecca Hamperian defended her state title in one-meter diving. Both were named to the all-state teams.

Henry Clay’s boys – Wrightson, Chris Gerhardstein, Russ Bryant and Chris Rush – knocked off perennial power St. Xavier in the 400 freestyle relay, and Rush finished third in the 200 freestyle.

On the girls’ side, Jenna Ballinger of Paul Laurence Dunbar High was third in the 100 freestyle, and Dunbar (Ballinger, Casey Ren, Courtney Younger and Sydney Toth) was third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Overall, Henry Clay’s boys came in fourth at the state meet. Among the girls’ teams, Dunbar finished seventh and Henry Clay was 10th.

The girls’ second team all-state selections included Henry Clay’s Kelly Ren and Bryan Station’s Kara Fredlock.

Henry Clay’s Dru Belli was named Outstanding Meet Coach; and Jamie Palumbo, who mentors competitors at several schools, was the Outstanding Diving Coach on the boys’ and the girls’ side.
