PLD swimmers snap up combined team title

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School won the combined team title in the 5th Region swimming and diving meet. The Tates Creek boys and the Henry Clay girls were runners-up.

Nick Wrightson of Henry Clay was named the meet’s Outstanding Competitor, and Craig Calvert of Tates Creek won the Sportsmanship Award.

The boys’ all-region team included Henry Clay’s Wrightson, Russ Bryant and Chris Rush; Tates Creek’s Christian Clark and Ethan Curl; and Dunbar’s Paul Parell. Making the girls’ all-region team were Dunbar’s Jenna Ballinger and Sandra Wilk, Lafayette’s Rebecca Hamperian and Henry Clay’s Kelly Ren.

The 5th Region swim meet was Feb. 12 at Eastern Kentucky University; divers competed Feb. 9 at Transylvania University. Winners from Fayette County Public Schools included the following.

Boys:
  • 200 medley relay – Henry Clay, 1:40.48 (Chris Gerhardstein, Nick Wrightson, Russ Bryant, Chris Rush).
  • 200 freestyle – Nick Wrightson, Henry Clay, 1.42.23.
  • 200 individual medley – Christian Clark, Tates Creek, 2:00.04.
  • 100 butterfly – Russ Bryant, Henry Clay, 53.88.
  • 500 freestyle – Nick Wrightson, Henry Clay, 4:39.67.
  • 200 freestyle relay – Dunbar, 1:30.76 (Paul Parell, Adam Harter, Fernando Zarate, Spencer Fair).
  • 400 freestyle relay – Henry Clay, 3:17.48 (Nick Wrightson, Chris Gerhardstein, Russ Bryant, Chris Rush).
Girls:
  • 100 freestyle – Jenna Ballinger, Dunbar, 53.64.
  • 200 freestyle relay – Dunbar, 1:40.84 (Sydney Toth, Casey Ren, Courtney Younger, Jenna Ballinger).
  • 100 backstroke – Kelly Ren, Henry Clay, 58.33.
  • 400 freestyle relay – Dunbar, 3:38.17 (Sydney Toth, Casey Ren, Sandra Wilk, Jenna Ballinger).
  • 1-meter diving – Rebecca Hamperian, Lafayette, 517.55.
