Superintendent Stu Silberman has once again been recognized nationally for his work with the Fayette County Public Schools.
His latest honor comes from the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL), which will present him the 2010 Award for Outstanding Support of Early Second Language Learning on Nov. 19 at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages annual conference in Boston.
“His exemplary support of early world language teaching and learning stands out as a model for all school administrators,” said Alicia Vinson, the world languages immersion program coordinator in FCPS, who nominated Silberman for the award.
This national recognition comes on the heels of a similar statewide honor: the 2010 Outstanding Administrator Award from the Kentucky World Language Association.
The number of language programs in the district has more than quadrupled since Silberman came aboard in 2004. During the 2004-2005 school year, there were just two elementary world language programs. This year, there are world language programs in 21 elementary schools.
“I’m a firm believer that it’s extremely important to start teaching second languages as early as possible beginning in preschool and kindergarten because the windows of opportunity in the brain for the acquisition of a second language are wide open,” Silberman said. “Those skills will help our students compete on an international level and enhance our students’ opportunities for future success.”
During the past four years there has also been an increase in the number of programs offered at the middle and high school levels in Fayette County.
“This recognition is a direct reflection of the work that’s taken place by the staff in our district to follow the directions set by our community through the 2020 Vision project,” Silberman said.
