Lafayette tops 11th Region in softball

Lafayette High’s softball team rolled to a 10-0 victory over Henry Clay in the 11th Region championship game, earning a trip to the state tournament.
The 11th Region all-tournament team included the Generals’ Cassidy Taylor, Lauren Brockman, Lauren Mitchell and MVP Brittany Sims; Henry Clay’s Sarah Mathis, Emily Miller and Riley Stokes; and Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Stephanie Harvey.
Lafayette (24-10) is headed to state for the first time since 2004. The Generals will play Owensboro Catholic on June 9 at Jack Fisher Park in Owensboro.
Last week, Lafayette pounded Dunbar 11-1 for its third straight 43rd District crown. The all-tournament team included the Generals’ Emily Kincaid, Alyssa Oakley, Brittany Sims and Cassidy Taylor; Dunbar’s Kaitlyn Elias, Kristy Leininger and Shelby Shanks; and Tates Creek’s Jaclyn Cooper and Finley Yuttayong.
In the 42nd District title game, Henry Clay fell to Scott County. The all-district team included the Blue Devils' Sarah Mathis, Shandra Williams, Riley Stokes and Beth Ann Hamilton; and Bryan Station’s Candice Johnson and Megan Hoovler.
Baseball
Tates Creek High was runner-up in the 11th Region baseball tournament, losing 3-1 to Lexington Catholic in the June 1 title game. Making the all-tournament were Tates Creek’s Austin Broome, Andrew Bryant and Aaron Mitchell; Henry Clay’s Corey Bays; and Bryan Station’s Brady Boling.
The previous week, the Commodores upset the No. 1 Knights 4-2 to capture the 43rd District championship. Named to the all-tournament team were Tates Creek’s Ryan Fucci, Andrew Bryant, Austin Broome and Travis Murray; Tyler Zander and Tyler DeAgano of Paul Laurence Dunbar High; and Johnny Youngblood and Tyler Messner of Lafayette High.
In the 42nd District showdown, Henry Clay snagged its third consecutive title by edging Bryan Station 6-5, avenging two regular-season losses. The all-tournament team included Henry Clay’s Field Engle, Corey Bays, James Hendron and MVP Walker Buehler; and Bryan Station’s Ryne Combs, Christopher LaPorte and Brady Boling.
