Kentucky American Water has awarded Ripple Effect Scholarships to six high school seniors for their academic achievement and commitment to the environment.
The 2011 recipients include three from Fayette County Public Schools: Brett Walles of Henry Clay High School, Timothy Michl of Lafayette High School and Dillon Hickman of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. Each receives a $500 college scholarship.
In addition to performing at top levels in the classroom, this year’s winners demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship through such activities as using organic farming techniques, helping with community gardens, encouraging volunteers for reforestation projects, championing Adopt-A-Highway participation and volunteering at river cleanups.
Kentucky American Water established the Ripple Effect Scholarship program in 2002. High school seniors in the company’s 10-county service area are eligible to apply. Since 2002, the company has awarded a total of $42,000 to 68 students.
